Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9 No. 1

Cropped view of this work that is 12 feet in length.

I have gone in a different direction with this music:  first I have changed Chopin Nocturnes going from Op.9 No.2 to Op.9 No. 1.  I then flipped the canvas upside down to better match the flow of the music.  Then I decided to change the notes size from 60mm to 80mm.  Finally I took a wet rag and some soap to soften the bottom edge that I had earlier added  a blue line.   The image above is from earlier tonight.  Photo updates tomorrow. I am a little disorganized on this piece…. so mistakes are happening early.

Chopin’s Nocturne Opus 9 No.2

This is the start of  a three panel work twelve feet in length.  Something I am realizing more is that when starting a new canvas the efforts come in small pieces.   First the yellow was put down and then after it was dry the magenta was added.  Now that has dried and I have pick it up the canvas off  of the floor and am now questioning if I should next add a dark blue with a roller to fill in a bit, and then palette knife that same color or just let it all settle in and see what tomorrow brings.

I wonder if every artist that has become comfortable with their efforts in the past go about the progression of their new work in a similar way?  I  have no doubt that Vincent had his routine.

OK,  after sitting away from the painting and starring  I have decided to do this:  I picked up today two small canvases 12 inches by 36 inches, and I think I am going to put them together and start another project.

Does that make and logical sense based on the previous conversion? Probably not, but thinking in logical paths gets to no where.

What I am thinking is I like working BIG.  I like walking across the work and moving about which is what you can do with a large canvas.  So, doing a small canvas, I am thinking boring……..so,.. again…, I am going to do this small canvas and do an excerpt, or something related to, the large work.  Hey, who knows it could work and for sure there is a need to produce small works.

Eyes On the Prize is Completed

Larger images has been uploaded to the main page at http://www.scottvonholzen.com.   When clicking at the images the added information of the price is now included.  I will be adding prices to a number of my works, and plan to setup a new web page to price lower many of the early music works.  The time has come to start moving these works for storage is getting more complicated.

What I like about this painting is the surprise with the ties that work much better then I originally thought.  At first  none of the lines were strung together but I was not happy just duplicating  a previous  style.   I think the canvas balances well, which is always a goal. I like the balance of the words, which can be interpreted in many ways, way beyond the music.  I think the flags on the eighth notes are larger than I would like but I wanted things to be punchy and that is what I got.  That green quiet looking quarter rest is their to just shake things up.  It is like each part of the music and each part of the work tries to its own statement.  That is the goal of every artist to let the work speak up and defend itself.
