Sandman Jan 25th

sandman, 20 by 120inches, theme 1950s

Last night was a struggle.  I tried a number of colors to pull this together  staying in the brown and yellow color fields; but I kept drifting to the reds.  Finally, after putting on a heavy coat of yellow, that just did not work, and looked green where it was laid over the burnt sienna, I put the canvas on the floor.  I then rolled in different reds diluted in water.  Back on the easels it went and using some deep reds and a alizarin,  we get what we got.  Not sure this color will work with this song.  That is a major issue.  What colors can I introduce to swing this piece more in my direction?  What can I do to this canvas surface to wake it up?

I try to predict each work’s progress and learn from the previous job; but each work tends to go its own direction and I just must deal with it and find the ways to make it all work.

The abstract music theme Crush

Cursh

Made a little bit of progress so far tonight.  Doing the non-beam notes in alizarin crimson.  This is another color that was not present in the base image. Slowly I am seeing my way through this canvas.  The object  is not to fight the work, but let the brush…. maybe it is not the brush.  There maybe something else going on…. a certain connection that develops between any artist and the current work.  I have said I only work on one canvas at a time.  That set aside relationship exists because I need to keep  a  tight connection .   I stay loyal to each work until that moment arrives when I have exhausted my efforts and it finally lets me go.

There was plenty of room to spread across my notation.   Tonight, The problem  with this background was finding a color for the notes that give them definition.  I found what will probably work in  sap green.  This shade of green was not used at all on this background.  That surprises me for I used a variety of colors searching for a combo that worked. Finally the canvas said it was OK to proceed.   Thanks for that, for I had run out of ideas.  You cannot see the notes like I do, they are all little tiny abstract painting, each an individual work of something.  I cannot stand boring routine, although each of these canvases require just that to get it done and at times it feels good to know, just what has to be completed in a session. So,with the help of a brush or a pallet knife I sculpt each note letting it tell me when just enough is enough.  You’ll see what i mean tomorrow.
