Eyes On the Prize is Completed

Larger images has been uploaded to the main page at http://www.scottvonholzen.com.   When clicking at the images the added information of the price is now included.  I will be adding prices to a number of my works, and plan to setup a new web page to price lower many of the early music works.  The time has come to start moving these works for storage is getting more complicated.

What I like about this painting is the surprise with the ties that work much better then I originally thought.  At first  none of the lines were strung together but I was not happy just duplicating  a previous  style.   I think the canvas balances well, which is always a goal. I like the balance of the words, which can be interpreted in many ways, way beyond the music.  I think the flags on the eighth notes are larger than I would like but I wanted things to be punchy and that is what I got.  That green quiet looking quarter rest is their to just shake things up.  It is like each part of the music and each part of the work tries to its own statement.  That is the goal of every artist to let the work speak up and defend itself.

AT LAST is finished but not photographed

I finished this painting on the 5th.    Because my camera is not available for another week it will take that much time to get a good photo of this work.   This is the largest I have done; 36″ by 10 feet.  Right now it is, of course, hanging in my living room.  This is a very good painting that was a challenge to complete.  I hit the wall with the two Eighth notes, with layer after layer failing to give the finished look I needed to keep this canvas in balance.  By the way the eighth notes are the two with the fan look at the center of the painting.  Even trying to follow the style of Time after Time did not help beyond just the physics.   Finally, it was again  just the matter of letting the painting find it’s own way.  It only took a few moments and they were done.

I will post a close up, maybe on Monday.  Today I have also started a new canvas Eyes on the Prize, sung by Pete Seeger and lately Bruce  Springsteen.

Time After Time is Finished

Time after time is finished and posted on my website scottvonholzen.com.

I do like the way this painting finished.  The colors and balance is solid and I like the words.   I tried to take  only those words from a song that can have their own meaning not attached to the music.  The painting twists sheet music and lyrics in order to create, hopefully, a different interpretation.  I like how the notation is steadily involving into it’s own ways of defining the music.

A purpose of  any art canvas whether of a wheat field or the song Time after time, is to have it stand on its own not needing the original inspiration to have value.   These musical art works hopefully are doing that and just maybe are reaching beyond  simple depiction.  Possibly, Time After Time is becoming its own source of  music.  Sure it is a  a stretch maybe; but Time after Time could be viewed as an abstract or  improvisational musical work without any of the restrictions that sheet music has.

Just some thoughts.
